How to remove water ring marks on marble

Water ring marks on marble

Water ring marks on marble are not likely stains, but acid-etched damage. Here is how a professional stone restoration service can give your marble a like-new finish.

Taking a closer look

To start, being able to accurately assess the damage and understanding what is required to restore the stone or marble is key to the restoration process. Determining if a polish can quickly resolve an issue or if honing the stone is likely the only option is one key step to renewing your marble.

Always start by cleaning your marble to ensure it’s not grime or other residue sitting on top of the stone. This will avoid costly call-out fees etc.

Cautious cleaning

Most watermarks can quickly be polished out using specialty polishing pads and pastes. Even quality marble stain remover may sometimes do the trick, however, this is usually not the case where some marks on the stone require sanding.

This job should be left to the professionals as inexperience can quickly exacerbate existing damage and in some cases damage the stone permanently.

Some methods of cleaning marble may cause long-term damage to your stone so be very careful when attempting to scrub one area intensely. Kitchen scourers can cause light scratches to the surface of your stone, as can gritty cleaning products like Gumption.

In saying this, you can always test a small inconspicuous area and see how the chosen method will affect your stone. We have had great success using Gumption with a damp microfibre cloth to remove some stains without causing any damage.

Remember: always avoid acids and strong alkaline cleaners.

Sanding and polishing done right

Most etch marks require some sanding and polishing and determining where to start is when experience plays a large role. Most professionals will quickly determine what grit or grade of sanding disk is required to quickly remove the mark while also reducing the number of grades to run through.

Starting with too heavy of grit means more unnecessary work down the line when removing the sanding marks prior to polishing. On the other hand, starting with too light of grit means it takes longer to remove the damage and also causes more wear on that pad, costing time & money. It’s all about balance.

Let us do the rest

Most stone repairs are completed using a variety of diamond sanding disks followed by a series of polishes. Depending on your type of stone, different grits and polishes may be used to get the desired finish.

Stone polishing by any means is not a fast job where most jobs require hours of labour and in some cases, days. High-quality stone repair services & businesses can be difficult to come across where it is fairly common to see lead times of weeks or even months.

Depending on the task at hand, smaller jobs can generally be completed within 1 week and larger jobs can take up to 3 weeks during our busy periods.

Here at 1st Choice Fix, we strive to provide a high-quality service at an affordable price.
